October is Scary!

I'm receiving telephone calls daily from consumers and small businesses asking me to clarify or help them sort out some of the information they are receiving from other companies on the Internet selling air conditioner covers.

Scary Sales Pitches!
Consumers are sharing with me the lengthy SALES PITCHES and elaborate and confusing explanations they are receiving when simply asking air conditioner cover manufacturers about the material used in the making of their
air conditioner covers.

Eerie Stuff!
I honestly have a hard time believing some of the things these folks are telling me when it comes to what other companies are telling them to get them to buy their air conditioner covers. Things like “special blending of synthetic fibers with cotton fiber material.”  Synthetic filament does not shrink or swell, cotton fiber does! Scary things like elaborate holes or vents and flaps and other concoctions built into their covers in attempt to allow their covers to expel condensation and breathe properly which is paramount. And eerie explanations as to why some companies make covers out of Vinyl and have the entire bottom snow line of equipment exposed to the harsh winter weather elements in a futile attempt to obtain proper air circulation.

Dead End!

Consumers are telling me they go online and visit hard to navigate and understand air conditioner cover websites only to arrive at a dead end because they cannot order online. Being forced to telephone the company with hopes of obtaining good thorough honest straightforward information to process their air conditioner cover order only to find themselves being pitched hard and told things that do not sound quite right and being presented in the end with what seems to be very high prices for a product made of materials that are simply spine-chilling.

Trick or Treat?
Don’t be tricked! Come visit our website http://www.capcover.com/ and learn about high quality long lasting proper air conditioner covers.

Outdoor Air Conditioner Condensers Should be On the Level

Carol and I were visiting her mothers house in Ohio this last summer and when I went outside to the back yard I noticed the outdoor air conditioner condenser was sitting on a concrete pad and the pad and condenser were leaning back towards the house at a very noticeable angle.

I walked closer to the outdoor condenser unit and noticed two problems. One, the condenser was leaning backward whereas the oil within the compressor within the outdoor condenser was not able to flow properly within the compressor which is not the best thing for safe, proper long lasting operation of the compressor which is the heart of the outdoor condenser.

Secondly I noticed the reason the compressor was leaning backwards towards the house because water from snow melt and rain water over time was washing away the dirt from the concrete foundation and basement window area. Earth butting up to the foundation of a house should be built up and the grading should allow for water shed away from the foundation of the house and into the flower bed and or yard.

I went inside the house and down to the basement to where the area of the condenser placement was outside and sure enough I noticed water marks around the basement window and on the inside of the foundation of the house.

Proper grading of the earth around the house to allow for water-runoff away from the home’s foundation is important and making sure your outdoor air conditioner pad the condenser sits on is sitting level is very important for proper operation of your compressor within the outdoor air conditioner condenser.

"I recently received the (indoor insulated cover and insulated side panels) for my window/through the wall air conditioning unit.  I just moved to NYC from CA, and it's coooold here.  My room was very drafty.  The cover came sooner than I expected and fits to the specifications I ordered.  I instantly felt the difference.  My room is now warm and toasty :).  I am sooooo happy with capcover, and I will definitely recommend you to friends.  You did an amazing job!  Well done. Keep up the good work...All the best,"

Warm Insulated Indoor Window and Through the Wall Air conditioner covers.
Cold draft problems? Control cold air draft coming from your window / wall air conditioner with our highest quality inside insulated window air conditioner cover or through-the-wall air conditioner cover with energy efficient insulation.

I forgot that the side panels are custom made. I purchased the side panels and the window air conditioner inside cover for the air conditioner that is in my 480 square-foot garage.  This garage was done over to be used as a workshop.  It is completely insulated and the walls are finished.  The overhead door is rated at 17.5 r insulating factor.  We didn't want to take the air conditioner off during the winter because it is bolted into the window frame.  Last winter it was very cold in the garage.  The side panels and cover didn't arrive a moment too soon - we installed them yesterday.  We can already tell the difference - in spite of the freezing cold outside, it is relatively comfortable in the garage. Thanks for making such a fine product.

High and Low Return Air Grills

Do you have both high and low return air grills in your home?

Walk through each room of your home and check to see if you have either high or low or both return air grills in your home. Many folks don't realize how important high return grills can be in maximizing air circulation throughout the home and how valuable having both high and low return air grills can be.
Cold air is heavy and falls or stratifies closer to the floor. Warm air is lighter and rises and stratifies higher near the ceiling area. During the summer cooling season warm air can be removed from rooms, cooled and circulated throughout your home faster with the use of return air grills installed high on the wall near the ceiling directly above your existing low side wall return air grills.

Return air grills are usually placed low on a sidewall nearest natural flowing cold air paths usually within living rooms, near stairways and main hall ways. Great systems will have both high and low return air grills within the bedrooms too! Return air grills are never located in or close to a kitchen, laundry room or bathrooms.

High and low return air grills allows hot and or cold air to circulate throughout your home faster and more efficiently which can greatly improve the balance and more evenly distribute the conditioned air within the home which will satisfy your desired thermostat set temperature quicker saving you money.

High and low return air grills are important and valuable in removing heat faster during the summer cooling season and heats cold air in the home faster and more evenly distributes warm air throughout the home during the heating season.

If you only have low return air grills in your home I recommend you call your local heating and
air conditioning contractor and have them provide you with more information and a price quotation to have high return air grill(s) added to your home.

If you would like to discuss your home’s return air system call Mark McKinnon at http://www.capcover.com/ 303.438.0906.

Starving for Air

You might be surprised of the newer and older homes that have been built with heating and cooling systems not designed correctly to allow for the proper amount of return air to the homes heating and cooling system.

Many homes heating and cooling systems are starving for return air which travels back into the furnace fan area and feeds air to be either cooled or heated and sent on its way to the supply registers and into the various rooms of the home.

Consider having a local heating and air conditioning company calculate the cubic feet per minute (CFM) of return air needed to properly supply your home with the cooling or heating for the square footage of the home.

Starving your home of return air makes your furnace fan work harder to deliver the desired amount of cooled or heated air to the rooms in your home and takes longer for the thermostat to realize the desired set temperature you wanted the home to have.

Starving your furnace of proper return air will make it hard to obtain good air circulation in the home and will also cost you more money to achieve the homes desired heating or cooling temperatures.

How to Remove A Grill Cover Without Tearing It

Sounds silly doesn’t it? ...how to remove a grill cover without tearing it but folks often tear their grill covers because they are just not thinking or perhaps they are in a rush to fire up the grill to get that great cookout started. Here is a best method approach to removing a quality canvas grill covers without tearing them.

If you have a grill that has counter extensions left and right of the grilling area you are probably aware those counter top extension have in most cases square corners. Many beautiful grill islands with granite or other hard surfaced counters have sharp square corners too and these corners are often the culprit in causing tearing of the grill covers.

To remove the grill cover without snagging and tearing the cover stand at one end of the grill unit and hold each corner of the cover and carefully lift the end of the cover up and over towards the top center of the grill lid whereas the material will be sitting on the grill lid.

Move your hands down mid-way of the remaining cover material and pull it up and over towards the top center of the grill lid.

Move to the opposite end of the grill and hold each top corner of the cover and carefully pull the cover up and over to the top center of the grill lid.

Move your hands down mid-way of the remaining cover material and pull it up and over towards the top center of the grill lid.

Both ends of the cover material should now be up and off of the ends of the grill counter lying on top of the counter top extensions and grill lid area.

Continue removing the cover from the grill unit and if clean and dry, fold the cover and place it in a clean dry area.

This method of removing quality canvas grill covers from grills and grill islands is quick and easy and will help prolong the life of the covers for many years.

If You Must! Cleaning Your Central Air Conditioning System

Every Fall I receive calls from folks wanting to learn what they can do to help winterize their whole house central air conditioning system with the idea they can save some money…especially during this economical downturn.

If you must, follow the guidelines below but as I always recommend it’s best to pay the experts to come out in the fall after the cooling season to check and clean and service your air conditioning system. Heating and air conditioning companies often offer spring/winter seasonal specials to service heating and air conditioning systems.

Clean indoor and outdoor coils helps maintain high efficiency operation of your air conditioning system and helps the unit from over-working to achieve desired cooling temperatures and saves on electrical bill too!

Providing your system has been operating just fine during the cooling season, a simple cleaning of dust and lint from the indoor coil and the drip pan located within the plenum which sits on top of your furnace is recommended. There should be an access door located on the plenum to access the indoor coil and coil drip pan.

Cleaning of the ‘fins’ of the coils of the outdoor unit is important and best left to the heating and cooling company experts but if you must... the first step is to disconnect the electrical power to the outdoor unit!!! There usually is an outdoor electrical emergency disconnect mounted on the building structure within a few feet of the outdoor condenser. Switch the outdoor electrical emergency disconnect to OFF before attempting to clean the outdoor condenser. If for some unusual reason there is no emergency electrical outdoor disconnect near the outdoor condenser stop what you are doing and call your local heating and air conditioning company to install one for you.

When checking your outdoor condenser look for bent or smashed aluminum fins on the coil tubing which wraps around within the outdoor unit inside behind the cowling. It is important that these soft aluminum fins be straightened out for proper functioning of the outdoor unit. Heating and air conditioning companies use a “comb” to insert between the aluminum fins to straighten them out. Its important air circulates between these coil fins. Some hardware stores and heating and air conditioning supplies stores sell these combs but to use the comb to straighten the fins requires removing the entire outdoor unit cowling. Not something the homeowner should attempt…it’s easy to take the cowling off but in many cases very difficult to put back together unless you know what you are doing.

After having switched OFF the outdoor emergency disconnect carefully disconnect the top cowling which also holds the fan unit by removing the screws. Carefully move the top cowling with fan off to one side of the top of the outdoor unit just far enough to get your water hose down into the unit. Be careful not to pull the fan wiring lose.

Any light amount of cottony material or other airborne material stuck to the fins and coils of the outdoor unit during the cooling season needs to be removed. Using 50% light non-acid based detergent with 50% water in a spray bottle, spray your coils with this non-acid based detergent. Let this solution sit on the coils for 3 or 4 minutes then spray the coils from the inside of the unit outward using low water hose pressure. If the cottony stuff is as thick as to sheet onto the coils, stop and call your local heating and air conditioning company to properly remove this amount of debris from the coils.

High water pressure can damage the fins of the coils! With LOW WATER PRESURE spray water from the inside of the unit outward through the coils which should help remove a lot of the cottony stuff and other dirt from the coils and fins. Make sure to cleanse the coils of any light non-acid detergent solution used to clean the coils. NEVER spray water from the outside into the coils. Never spray water at an angle onto the coils which will bend the fins.

Check the inside of the outdoor condenser for leaves or pine needles or other debris making sure all drain holes at the bottom of the unit are open.

Once your unit is clean and dry, place a proper high quality, long lasting breathable treated canvas air conditioner cover onto your outdoor unit to keep your condenser clean, dry and free of any possible condensation during the cooler weather and harsh winter elements. Never use non-breathable coated materials to cover your outdoor unit. High quality proper air conditioner covers help greatly in protecting and prolonging the life of your air conditioning system investment.

Air Conditioner Covers

Clients often ask why we focus on offering high quality long lasting durable light colored canvas air conditioner covers.

Light colored high quality breathable fabric (very important) canvas air conditioner covers reflect excessive heat caused by exposure to sun light and does not absorb excessive heat and or build up heating of the fabric and will therefore not accelerate deterioration or the breaking down of the fabric.

Our made to size high quality heavy duty, long lasting durable breathable treated canvas and Superior Marine Canvas air conditioner covers are offered in Goldish/Tan, Light Gray and Light Green colors and reflects sunlight and heat very well and contributes to a much longer lasting air conditioner cover. Our air conditioner covers craftsmanship and material integrity are warranted for 5 and 10 years!

Evaporative Cooler Air Conditioner Air Filtration

The Evaporative Cooler Filter Media for an evaporative cooler / swamp cooler air conditioner is quite different from furnace or other dry air supply air filtration needs. Evaporative cooler air conditioner filter media is a different kind of filter media that is used to accept and hold varying degrees water. One might check with the evaporative cooler equipment manufacturer to explore a down stream inline filter rack application to filter cooled air supplied by the evaporative cooler. There are certain allowances / restrictions for air flow designed by the evaporative cooler manufacturer. Placing a down stream air filter may impede air flow and create a back pressure not desired or warranted by the equipment manufacturer.

NOTE: Furnace filters which are different from evaporative cooler filter media with a merv rating of 9 to 12 are used in commercial and industrial applications and will stop particles in the 1 to 3 micron range. These filters are a great choice for home owners who want the best dust control possible. When using filters with Merv 9 ratings and above it is important to clean or replace them when recommended by the manufacturer usually every 30 days for normal use because they will have a negative effect on air flow when they become dirty. This can lead to performance problems and decreased operating efficiency.

Media air filters (dense filter materials) are not recommended for evaporative cooler air conditioning systems because they will trap and build up and hold condensation/water and entertain mold, mildew and bacteria.

Leave cleaning of the outdoor air conditioning condenser to the professionals!

A neighbor of mine asked if I could help him put his outdoor air conditioner condenser back together. What?

My neighbor said he wanted to save some money by cleaning his outdoor condenser coils himself rather than pay for a heating and air conditioning service company to come to his home to do it for him.

My neighbor had removed all cowling screws and removed each loose cowling section in a random manner until the entire outdoor condenser was stripped of its protective louvered shell down to the vary base of the condenser with the top fan section hanging off to one side, with fan wiring dangerously close to pulling apart!

Why?  To save money and to remove airborne cottonwood seed cottony masses which fly through the air and collected on his outdoor condenser coils. This cottony stuff can clog up the outdoor condenser coils in a N.Y. minute! It can become so thick that you can actually pull it off the outdoor condenser cooling coils and fins in sheets!

When the outdoor unit is operating the top mounted fan draws air in through the sides of the unit to cool the coils sucking in flying debris across the cooling coils and fins. Clogged outdoor condenser coils will drop the operating efficiency of central air conditioning system like a rock and drive up your cooling electric bill dramatically.

Clogged or dirty outdoor condenser coil fins also stress your condenser operating system, and create a situation whereas your system will have to work harder and longer to achieve the desired cooling temperatures. Longer operating times…higher summertime cooling electric bills!

There is a specific order in removing and re-installing the louvered protective cowling of an outdoor condenser. It’s difficult and sometimes requires two people to put it all back together. Proper and complete cleaning the outdoor condenser is something that should definitely be left to the professionals!

For optimal performance of your air conditioning system purchase our high quality, durable long lasting breatheable canvas air conditioner cover and place it on your outdoor condenser in the fall and leave it on until the spring cottonwood seed and other springtime flying debris has ended.

A Puddle Of Water Around The Base Of My Furnace...

A client asked me why a puddle of water was collecting at the base of his furnace. It was summertime and there had been no rain for some time.

After asking the client a few quick questions I was able to determine the client has a central air conditioning system and the problem was the indoor "A" coil or indoor condenser which sits inside the plenum, the sheet metal box on top of the furnace, had a clogged up drip pan drain.

Condensation water normally flowing into the indoor coil drip pan and drain tube to the basement floor drain was building up and running over the clogged up drip pan and condensation water was running down the inside of the furnace and onto the basement floor.

There should be an inspection panel located on the front of the furnace plenum and with an annual spring maintenance check and cleaning of the furnace and indoor coil you can prevent this problem from happening.

Making sure the indoor coil is clean will help maintain a higher level of operating efficiency of your central air conditioning system. Making sure the indoor condensing coil drip pan is clear of dust, lent and or hard water build up will insure the condensation water will properly flow freely from the indoor condenser drip pan and through the drain tube to the basement floor drain.

Water flowing over the indoor condenser drip pan and down through the inside of your furnace can damage your furnace over a few short years.

My Grill Cover Is Leaving Black Marks On My New Stainless Steel Grill Lid!

A consumer called and complained to us they had purchased a black barbeque grill cover from another company that sold plastic type vinyl covers and acrylic covers and the grill cover was leaving black marks with a faint fabric weave pattern on their new stainless steel barbeque grill lid.

The consumer stated the black markings and faint fabric pattern markings on the barbeque grill lid were nearly impossible to remove.

The consumer wanted to know why this was happening. After asking the consumer several questions we were able to quickly identify the problem!

1. The consumer had purchased a black vinyl fabric backed grill cover.
2. The consumer lived in Arizona where they had experienced prolonged periods of heat.
3. The cover would sit on the barbeque grill / grill lid for long periods of time in the Arizona heat.

Problem: Heat transfer of the black vinyl through the vinyl cover fabric backing onto the stainless steel barbeque grill lid.

Solution: Purchase our high quality, durable and long lasting natural fiber outdoor canvas grill covers.

Research shows it is better to use light colored materials on outdoor equipment with exposure to high heat because it does a better job of reflecting the sun which creates heat.

Dark colored barbeque grill covers absorb and can amplify heating of metal surfaces the cover is to protect and degrades the cover material quicker than lighter colored fabrics and therefore the cover ends up with a shorter life.

I recently purchased and installed a Champion Essick evaporative cooler side dishcarge for my mom's home.

The model is RN50W.

Question #1, I need something other than the pictured cover on your website.  Is black, dark green available? Yes!

Question #2, my mom is elderly, and due to her alergies she needs to cover the cooler each time her lawn is cut.  So I need a swamp cooler cover that is easy to place over the swamp cooler and then removed fairly easy and yes it will remain on the swamp cooler during the winter season.  If I order the cut out opening option, does that make the cover easier to use? Absolutely!

I have a question about my heating system can you help me?

With over 17.5 years as a HVAC professional I believe I can assist you. If I do not know the answer to your question(s) I have great relationships with all major equipment manufactures and between us I feel confident we can help you. Email me at mark@capcover.com with questions and provide contact information and I will do all I can to resolve your heating and air conditioning system issues.

Will you make cut outs for the refrigerant tubing and electrical wiring where I want them?

We will make cut outs within the protective cover where you want them. Our cut outs are custom measured and cut to fit nicely around the refrigerant tubing and electrical wiring of the outdoor air conditioner condenser.

What do I do to keep my cover on the outdoor air conditioner unit in very high winds?

We recommend securing your full length air conditioner outdoor condenser protective cover with a set of quality long lasting nylon secure straps.

We offer a set of 2 made to size high quality long lasting nylon web straps which can be placed around the outdoor unit cover and cinched up tight to keep the cover tight to the outdoor unit and not allow the cover to shift around or blow off the outdoor air conditioner unit during high winds. Has 200 lbs of pull and non-rust buckles.

Commonly offered cotton fabric straps will rot and mildew and not last long when used outdoors. We kindly suggest you not waste your money on purchasing these types of cheap cotton straps.

Full Length Protective Covers are Highly Recommended

I have been receiving questions from folks wanting to know if a full length air conditioner cover is recommended. The answer is yes!

Properly made air conditioner covers made of waterproof (highly water resistant) breathable fabric should cover the bottom of the outdoor condenser to keep ice and snow build up out of the bottom of the outdoor air conditioner condenser unit.

Some companies have a real condensation build up problem when offering their vinyl covers and make their covers to not cover and protect the bottom of the outdoor unit to try and compensate for vinyl material that does not breathe and builds up condensation.

Fortunately most folks see through this sales pitch and purchase proper breathable full length air conditioner covers. Improper covers can build up condensation and can damage electrical control wiring and other critical components of the outdoor condenser.

Simple Straightforward Long Lasting Light Colored Barbeque Grill Covers

With over 22 years experience in providing high end long lasting quality canvas barbeque grill protective covers we have found that lighter colored quality canvas barbeque grill protective covers last the longest and weather much better than black or other dark colored protective covers. Black or dark colored covers absorb and build-up heat as well as heat up the metal barbeque grill lid which degenerates the protective cover material integrity. Lighter colored covers stand up better to hot summer days and reflect heat a lot better than do black or dark colored grill covers!

How do I Clean Mildew, Mold and Tree Pitch From my Air Conditioner Cover?

Never place your canvas air conditioner cover into a washing machine or dryer.

Dry brush or use a damp cloth to first address the affected area then use a bucket of light detergent liquid soap and water to clean the area of concern. Use a water hose to spray down and rinse the detergent off the canvas. You may want to apply a water repellent after cleaning the canvas.

Is this a Joke?

A homeowner sent me information about a local heating and air conditioning service company recommending a black vinyl fleese lined "short" cover for their air conditioner.

Are you kidding? a black vinyl cover with fleese lining that holds moisture? A short cover that allows snow, water and ice build-up at the bottom of your air conditioner housing? Vinyl which does not last long and can become brittle over a short period of time and crack when exposed to harsh winter weather? Really? A local heating and air conditioning service company the homeowner expects will protect their air conditioning equipment investmant would recommend this type of cover to a homeowner client? Really?... Is this a joke?

We highly recommend homeowners use a proper breathable full length
air conditioner cover!

Save Money by Properly Winterizing Your Air Conditioners and Other Utilities

Fall is a beautiful time of year for many people.  One thing that can change that perspective is the sheer amount of work that has to get done.  There are so many tasks that need to be accomplished around the house and yard to prepare for the winter.  The changing color of the leaves on trees is such an attraction until they begin to fall.  They literally cover some yards while just standing as an annoyance to others by clogging gumming up rain gutters and clogging air conditioning units.

Can you believe this?

What is going on in this crazy mixed up world? Have we all lost it?
I'm sorry but I have to make some observations and voice some personal comments and express what I believe and feel.

It had been reported to me that there is a "vinyl / plastic" type or coated looking air conditioner cover in the market place being offered for $180-$190 dollars! One of our folks looked it up and sure enough there is a cover being offered with an exotic scientific type explanation of temperature differences experienced within an enclosed air conditioner condenser etc. etc. etc.

This cover manufacturer uses a popular major heating and air conditioning equipment manufacturer registered brand name in association with their product sales online offer which appears to possibly suggest to the consumer this cover is the major brand equipment manufacturer's authorized aftermarket protective cover to be used on the coveted major brand equipment manufacturers condenser products. If this is a licensed aftermarket cover product of a name brand equipment manufacturer  I would certainly appreciate proof of it.

Should I cover my air conditioner?

Air conditioners are expensive! One could easily pay depending on the tonnage size of the outdoor unit between $1,800.00 - $4,000.00 to replace the outdoor condenser!

A high quality, breathable full length protective cover is highly recommended.
In my humble opinion, a
ir conditioner covers not full length defeat the overall objective of protecting the outdoor unit. Improper "short" covers not protecting the bottom portion of the outdoor air conditioner condenser from water, snow and ice build-up does not make a lot of sense to me. Some cover manufacturers make short covers, and some cover manufacturers add flaps in a futile attempt to combat condensation build-up because of the type of non-breathable cover material they use.

Question; what happens when snow and ice mount up around the base of the air conditioner with a short cover for weeks or months and the sun comes out during mid day and the temperature drops later in the afternoon? Will condensation be produced and locked-in the air conditioner when using this type of non-breathable short cover with snow and ice mounted up around the base of the cover and air conditioner unit?

Improper non-breathable vinyl, plastics and other inexpensive imported poly coated materials lock in condensation which will accelerate rust, corrosion and damage to the inner workings of your outdoor air conditioner and are absolutely not recommended by this
HVAC  professional.

Inside your unit are the cooling coils, a compressor and exhaust fan system and important tubing connections and critical electrical components.

Buyer beware! Some nice looking, outdoor furniture-type materials also used for making air conditioner covers with a very convincing slick website and sales pitch are to be scrutinized prior to making a purchase. . .nice looks and a great sales pitch may not necessarily protect your outdoor condenser from damage and an expensive replacement.

Let's face it. Your outside air conditioner is an expensive and important piece of equipment usually located out of the way on the side of your house. The air conditioner condenser is not a patio or back deck lounge chair or cocktail table. As you may have already guessed, I recommend a high quality, durable and long lasting proper breathable material air conditioner cover to protect your air conditioner investment.

What are your thoughts? Would you be willing to pay less than 5% of the replacement value of your outdoor air conditioner condenser to properly protect it?
